They were supposed to be the absolute favourites going into the Rolex Farr 40 European Championship 2008 and indeed proofed to be at the top of the table after the second race day. Despite a little hole in the hull after a crash on the starting line “Mascalzone Latino” defended the overall lead on Friday (29th August) in her inner Italian battle with “Joe Fly” sitting right at her neck (both tied on 14 points). Fickle north-westerly winds gusting and shifting especially in a few rain showers put snakes and ladders all around the race course where every little mistake was punished hard.

But Vincenzo Onorato, the three-times in a row Rolex Farr 40 World Champion, was 100 percent concentrated as usual. He steered his boat to the third out of four bullets he scored in total after German newcomer “Facilia Mare” had hit “Mascalzone Latino” with its stern right underneath the water line. Onorato’s compatriot Giovanni Maspero fought back with three second places and remained tied on points at the end of the second race day of the fifth Rolex Baltic Week.

“Siragusawa” owned and helmed by Olli-Pekka Lumijaervi from Finland tried to keep up with the leaders but lost six points ranking third overall with another four races to come. “We are happy with this result, because the Italians simply sailing a bit better than everyone else”, said tactician Dee Smith from the US. David Holm’s “Monick” from Copenhagen, Denmark lays another six points back on fourth followed by the Danish winner of race six “Asterisk” (Ole van der Heide) and Wolfgang Schaefer’s “Struntje light” from Germany.
